For 2 months I was searching for the illusive AE86 hatch.... and just 2 days ago i found it. After searching a 4000 mile radius only to find one on the other side of the US, I almost gave up. Then miraculously I found one only 20 miles from home. It was the happiest day of my life. well... it was close
The first problem with my newly purchased AE86 was it needed a laundry list of repairs that the guy i bought it from told me it didn't need. Considering i didn't know anything about the engine and the car itself, i took it to the auto repair shop and had them inspect it for $30.00. While it was at the shop i looked it over and opened the trunk, where i found tons of rust!!! I was very disapointed and mad that the guy told me nothing was wrong with the car, though after showing it to the repair guy he told me it wasn't to big of a deal and could be fixed. The next day i vacumed the whole car and cleaned every nook and cranny. Then washed it and started with the rust in the trunk. After brainstorming some solutions to temperarily fix the problem, i sanded down most of the thick rust, and cleaned it out. After the plagued and rusted out sheet metal in trunk was somewhat smooth, i started to brush on thick coats of Polyurethane resin over the rust. Then patched a couple holes with fiberglass on both sides of sheet metal. After the resin dried i sprayed Rustoleum on top of all the resin and let it dry for 24 hours. After the rust was temporarily taken care of, i found another problem..... The gas tank was leaking gas. Luckily the owner of the repair shop was a friend of my family and would fix the leaking gas tank for free. Though After all of these attempts to fix problems that i had found on the car, the repair shop still after 5 days hadn't inspected the car. Amazing.... i guess they were really busy. Though when they finnaly had inspected the car, then I started to worry. Here's the list of parts it needed: 1. New distributer 2. New clutch master 3. New clutch slave 4. Clutch pedal bushings 5. new tires 6. New belts 7. New timing belt 8. power window controler 9. Majer tune up not including the tires they said everything would cost around $900.00!!!!! Astonished why it costed so much i took my car home and started doing some research on the car. I first bought a Factory Toyota repair manual, and took on the tasks one at a time. I first started buying the parts. The distributer i got first for $50.00, then got some belts and bosch spark plugs from Kregan, and looked online for the other parts. At toyotaparts4u.com i bought a new water pump, thermoustat, Timing belt, and oil filter. I also wanted to lower the high temperatures in the engine, so I bought a new Koyo type S radiator from jspec.com for $200.00. Now came the task of istalling the parts..... At first glance my engine looked like crap, the valve covers were dirty, paint scraped off, and the whole engine needed to be cleaned, before i start taking evrything apart. I first cleaned all plastics pieces underneith engine, then sprayed engine degreaser all over engine and covered up head, valve covers, and electrical stuff. After the engine was soaked in degreaser for an hour i presher washed everything and dried off most of water with some rags. To also make the engine look newer i had the valve covers sandblasted and cleaned off most of the wires until they shined. The first part i installed was the distributer, which was pretty easy, however finding the #'s buy crankshaft pulley was a challenge. Though after turning pully to TDC compression distributer went in smoothly. After i installed distributer and spark plugs i started with the timing belt and got stuck.... It turns out i need a pulley puller to get the #1 crankshaft pulley off, and the tool costs over $100.00. So, i will have to tow the car to the auto shop and have them install timing belt, and newly accuired clutch master cylinder and clutch slave.....When they do that it will be mechanicly sound and ready to go another 100k miles hopefully....... story cont... When the car was towed to the repair shop the mechanics took a look at it and when i started the engine smoke puffed out the intake :( so the timing was off. With help from the mechanics i took off the old timing belt and put the new on. Then when i started it again it did the same thing :( . Well it turns out the distributer i put in was 60 degrees off where it should be. So i corrected it to 10 degrees started it up and it stayed on! Now i have another task of buying and installing new Tokico blues and TRD springs to take the place of my old suspension. Soon I'll have the $$$$
